Can weightlifting really cause an Aortic Dissection??

Writer's picture: Shaun NicosiaShaun Nicosia

Weightlifting is unlikely to cause an aneurysm to form, but it can increase the risk of rupture in people who already have one.

Explanation:

Weightlifting can increase blood pressure by up to 400%, which can strain blood vessels.

This increase in blood pressure can be transmitted to the brain, increasing the risk of rupturing an aneurysm.

The Valsalva maneuver used during weightlifting can also increase the risk of aneurysm rupture.

Other activities that can increase the risk of aneurysm rupture include anger, sexual activity, startling or stressful events, smoking, and drug use.

What to do:

If you have an aneurysm, you should talk to your doctor before doing higher-intensity activities. You should avoid activities like heavy weight-lifting and high-impact contact sports.

Additional information:

While weightlifting can increase the risk of aneurysm rupture, other studies suggest that higher physical activity may reduce the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm.
